What's Your Heritage?

Every August long weekend, Edmonton transforms into a celebration of cultures from around the world. Whether your family has lived here for generations or you've recently made Edmonton your home, the Edmonton Heritage Festival is an opportunity to celebrate your own heritage while discovering the traditions, food, music, and stories of others.

Known simply as Heritage Days by many Edmontonians, the festival has become a beloved summer tradition and is recognized as the world's largest three-day multicultural celebration. With free admission, it welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors who come together to experience the incredible diversity that makes Edmonton one of Canada's most inclusive cities.

A Festival Built on Community

The festival began in 1976 with just 11 ethno-cultural communities gathering in Mayfair Park (now William Hawrelak Park) to share traditional foods, crafts, music, and customs. What started as a modest community event has grown into one of Edmonton's signature festivals, attracting visitors from across Alberta and beyond.

Over the decades, attendance has grown from approximately 20,000 visitors in its early years to hundreds of thousands of people over the three-day weekend. During the extensive rehabilitation of William Hawrelak Park, the festival temporarily moved to Borden Park before proudly returning to its longtime home.

Festival Information

When: August Long Weekend (Saturday through Monday)

Where: William Hawrelak Park, Edmonton

Admission: Free! There is no cost to enter or enjoy the cultural performances. Food, beverages, and merchandise are purchased using the festival's ticket system.

Experience the World Without Leaving Edmonton

One of the festival's greatest attractions is the opportunity to explore more than 60 cultural pavilions, each representing a unique country, region, or heritage. Visitors can:

  • Taste authentic cuisine from around the globe.

  • Watch traditional music and dance performances.

  • Learn about different customs, languages, and cultural traditions.

  • Browse handcrafted art, clothing, and cultural displays.

  • Meet members of Edmonton's diverse cultural communities.

Whether you're sampling foods you've never tried before or reconnecting with your family's roots, every pavilion offers something new to discover.

More Than a Festival

The Edmonton Heritage Festival is more than just great food and entertainment—it's a celebration of understanding, respect, and community. It reminds us that while we come from different backgrounds, our diversity is one of Edmonton's greatest strengths.

For newcomers, the festival provides a welcoming opportunity to share their culture and connect with others. For children, it's an exciting way to learn about the world through music, dance, stories, and hands-on experiences. For lifelong Edmontonians, it's a cherished tradition that brings neighbours together year after year.

So, what's your heritage?

Whether you're proudly representing your family's traditions or simply curious to learn about someone else's, the Edmonton Heritage Festival invites everyone to celebrate the cultures that make our city vibrant, welcoming, and uniquely Canadian.

Showing Kindness in Edmonton: Small Acts, Big Impact

Edmonton is known for its resilient spirit—but what truly makes our city special is its people. As one of Canada's most welcoming cities, Edmonton is home to families, newcomers, students, seniors, and people from all walks of life. Small acts of kindness help everyone feel connected and remind us that we all belong.

Kindness doesn't have to be a grand gesture. It's often the little moments that make the biggest difference.

  • Share a smile on the LRT or help someone find their way.

  • Buy a coffee for the person behind you in the drive-thru.

  • Practice courteous driving by letting someone merge, stopping patiently for pedestrians at crosswalks, giving cyclists plenty of space, and showing patience during Edmonton's busy construction season.

  • Shovel a neighbour's sidewalk, especially for seniors or those with limited mobility.

  • Welcome a newcomer by offering directions, recommending local parks and restaurants, or simply saying hello.

  • Teach children the value of kindness by encouraging them to include others, help classmates, or thank the people who serve their community.

Give Back to Your Community

If you'd like to make an even greater impact, Edmonton offers many ways to get involved.

  • Support vulnerable neighbours by volunteering with Edmonton Meals on Wheels, Hope Mission, Edmonton's Food Bank, CMHA Edmonton, or Homeward Trust.

  • Protect our city by planting trees, caring for local parks, or promoting composting and waste reduction.

  • Find volunteer opportunities through Volunteer Connector, ECVO, the Edmonton Community Foundation, or United Way Alberta Capital Region.

Why Kindness Matters

Edmonton has always been a city that comes together when it matters most. Whether you're welcoming a new family to the neighbourhood, showing courtesy on the road, helping a person feel included, or lending a hand to someone in need, every act of kindness strengthens our community. Together, these everyday moments create a city where people feel valued, supported, and proud to call Edmonton home.

Rain, Rain, Go Away. Come Again Another Day

Edmonton has experienced an exceptionally wet year, with more than 570 mm of precipitation recorded so far. Fueled by powerful summer storms, the city also set a new record for its wettest June on record, receiving over 255 mm of rain—far above the historical average of approximately 79 mm.

While all that rain has been great for gardens, it has also placed significant strain on Edmonton's stormwater system. Fortunately, homeowners can help reduce runoff, conserve water, and even earn money by installing rain barrels through EPCOR's RainWise Stormwater Rebate Program.

Why Install a Rain Barrel?

Save Money

Why pay for treated water when nature provides it for free? Rain barrels collect water from your roof that can be used to water lawns, gardens, flower beds, and trees, helping lower your municipal water consumption during the growing season.

Help Reduce Stormwater Runoff

Heavy rain can overwhelm storm drains, increasing the risk of localized flooding. Capturing rainwater from your roof helps reduce the amount of water entering the stormwater system during major rainfall events.

Support the Environment

Using collected rainwater decreases demand for treated drinking water, reducing the energy and resources required to treat and distribute water throughout the city.

RainWise Rebate Details

Edmonton homeowners may qualify for a rebate through EPCOR's RainWise Stormwater Rebate Program.

To qualify:

  • Receive $0.25 per litre of rain barrel storage capacity.

  • Install a minimum combined storage capacity of 200 litres.

  • Follow EPCOR's program requirements and application process.

Tips for Setting Up Your Rain Barrel

  • Place your rain barrel on a level, sturdy base approximately 2 metres from your home's foundation.

  • Elevate the barrel slightly to make filling watering cans easier.

  • Install a fine mesh screen to keep out leaves, debris, and mosquitoes.

  • Empty and disconnect your rain barrel before winter to prevent freezing damage.

Make Every Rainstorm Count

With Edmonton seeing record-breaking rainfall, there's never been a better time to capture and reuse rainwater. A rain barrel is an inexpensive addition that helps conserve water, protects local infrastructure, and can even put money back in your pocket through EPCOR's rebate program.

For complete program details, eligibility requirements, and to apply, visit the EPCOR RainWise Stormwater Rebate Program:

Fort Edmonton Park - Where Edmonton’s History Comes to Life

If you've ever wondered what life was like in Edmonton's early days, Fort Edmonton Park offers the chance to step directly into the past. Nestled on 158 acres of forested parkland in the heart of the North Saskatchewan River Valley, this award-winning attraction is one of Canada’s largest living history museums.

Since opening in 1974, Fort Edmonton Park has brought history to life through recreated streets, historic landmarks, vintage rides, and immersive experiences that showcase the people, places, and events that shaped Edmonton and Alberta into what they are today.

The experience begins at the reconstructed 1846 Fort Edmonton, where visitors can explore the fur trade era that helped establish the region as an important commercial hub. From there, guests travel through time to the Settlement Era of 1885, the Municipal Era of 1905, and the bustling Metropolitan Era of the 1920s, each featuring authentic streetscapes, historic buildings, and interpreters dressed in period clothing.

One of the park’s most significant attractions is the Indigenous Peoples Experience, developed in collaboration with First Nations and Métis partners. This award-winning exhibit shares the stories, traditions, and cultures of Indigenous peoples who lived along the North Saskatchewan River long before European settlement.

History comes alive throughout the park with many original buildings relocated from communities across Alberta. Highlights include the Al-Rashid Mosque, the first mosque built in Canada, as well as historic homes, businesses, schools, and community gathering places that showcase everyday life from generations past.

Visitors can hop aboard a vintage steam train, ride beautifully restored streetcars operated by the Edmonton Radial Railway Society, or enjoy the excitement of the 1920s Midway featuring classic carnival rides and games. The park is also home to the Capitol Theatre, a faithful recreation of Edmonton’s historic 1929 movie palace, where guests can experience live performances, historical presentations, and films that reflect the entertainment culture of the era. Seasonal events, special exhibits, and interactive programming throughout the park ensure that every visit offers something new to discover.

Whether you're a history enthusiast, a family looking for a memorable day out, or a visitor wanting to learn more about Edmonton's roots, Fort Edmonton Park provides a fascinating and entertaining glimpse into the city's remarkable past.

KDays Returns to the Edmonton EXPO Centre and Exhibition Grounds

KDays began as the Edmonton Exhibition in 1879 (later becoming an annual tradition in the early 1900s). In 1964, the summer fair was rebranded as Klondike Days, celebrating the spirit of the 1890s Gold Rush. During this era, Edmontonians embraced the theme by dressing in period costumes, complete with top hats, corsets, and western attire.

In 2006, the event was renamed Capital EX, but the change wasn't well received. Responding to public feedback, organizers introduced the name KDays in 2013, blending the festival's Klondike heritage with a more modern identity.

One of the fair's most beloved traditions, the KDays Parade, officially came to an end in 2022. Since then, the festival has evolved to focus on live entertainment, innovation, family attractions, and stronger Indigenous partnerships, including the kiyânaw Indigenous Experience, which celebrates the rich history and cultures of the peoples whose traditional lands Edmonton occupies.

KDays 2026

This year's KDays runs July 17–26, 2026, at the Edmonton EXPO Centre and Exhibition Grounds. Visitors can experience everything that has made KDays a summer tradition, including thrilling midway rides, classic carnival games, live entertainment, and an incredible selection of food—from mini donuts and corn dogs to creative new fair-food creations competing in the annual New Foods Contest.

The KDays Music Fest returns with ten nights of concerts featuring artists such as Ty Dolla $ign, Down With Webster, Mother Mother, Noah Cyrus, The Beaches, Peach Pit, Connor Price, bbno$, MICO, and Pennywise, all included with general admission (with optional front-of-stage upgrades available). Whether you're chasing adrenaline on the rides, discovering your next favourite festival food, or singing along at a concert, KDays continues to offer something for every age and interest.

Why Buyers Continue to Gravitate Toward Edmonton’s Most Connected Communities

In today’s real estate market, buyers are prioritizing more than square footage—they are investing in lifestyle, convenience, and long-term value. That shift continues to fuel demand in some of Edmonton’s most desirable neighbourhoods, including Glenora, Crestwood, Parkview, Laurier Heights, and Windsor Park.

These established communities continue to attract professionals, families, downsizers, and a new generation of lifestyle-driven buyers who value connectivity as much as the homes themselves. Proximity to Edmonton’s river valley trail system, downtown core, top schools, cafés, boutique shopping, fitness studios, and dining destinations has become a major priority for today’s buyers.

The appeal is rooted in everyday convenience. Residents can enjoy morning walks through the river valley, quick access to downtown offices, nearby golf courses, locally loved restaurants, and some of the city’s most scenic green spaces—all within minutes of home. Buyers are increasingly seeking neighbourhoods that support both busy professional lives and a strong sense of community.

Communities in Edmonton’s central-west corridor also continue to evolve with elevated amenities and growing local business culture. Independent coffee shops, specialty markets, wellness spaces, and community-focused retail have helped create neighbourhoods that feel both established and vibrant.

Location-first living is becoming a defining trend. Rather than moving farther from the city core for more space, many buyers are choosing walkability, shorter commutes, and lifestyle accessibility. The ability to stay connected to Edmonton’s best amenities while enjoying quiet residential streets and mature surroundings continues to drive long-term demand in these areas.

Another key attraction is balance. These neighbourhoods offer a rare combination of urban convenience and natural beauty, with access to parks, trails, recreation, and community gathering spaces that support an active lifestyle year-round.

As Edmonton continues to grow, communities like Glenora, Crestwood, Parkview, Laurier Heights, and Windsor Park remain some of the city’s most timeless and sought-after addresses—not simply because of the homes themselves, but because of the lifestyle they continue to offer buyers looking for connection, convenience, and enduring value.
